AFA 3 vs San Pedro 1 Game abandoned after 81 mins.
one of the performances of the season saw AFA maintain their unbeated run, but the victory (we think it will be victory but it will need to be confirmed by the federation) was marred by injury to captain Luis McCoy who dislocated his knee after a collision in the box with Andi our keeper. He was understandably in agony and the match was paused as we awaited the ambulance to put it back in place. However whilst waiting for the match to restart, the San Pedro camp decided to steal the referees mobile phone, and threaten him. Admittedly he was far from a good referee but the actions of the San Pedro crew was inexcusable and it was understandable that the ref had no desire to restart the game.
AFA can be very proud of their performance. They finally seem to have put right some of the things that were not working before, and despite early pressure from San Pedro, AFA eventually started getting the ball down and playing and really took the game to them , especially in the 2nd half.
Andi made 3 world class saves but could and should have done better with the only goal we have conceded all month as he was too far off his line to stop a speculative lob towards goal.
The defensive pairing of Julian and Omar again proved tough to break through and Dennis and Jaime continued to be solid throughout.
The return of Stefan in place of Juampi who was away with his school added to toughness and hard work to the team and although he will be dissapointed he missed his penalty with a poor effort that would have put the game way beyond San Pedro at 4-1, he can be very pleased with his contribution to the match. He played a key role in the match and the result.
Zak helped himself to his 18th goal of the season, and he is really inspired since returning from Brentford. Luis also up until the injury although physically much smaller than the tough San Pedro midfield made his mark on the match as he put in quality free kicks all match and really started to thread good balls for the strikers.
Jay helped himself to another goal, and this one was one of his best finished of the season. He took it early and nicked it under the keeper before he had time to set himself, a real strikers goal. Hard work from Alan left him with not much in the tank and he was replaced towards the end by Diego.
Special mention again must go to Nico who was the real difference between the teams today. He got tackles in when it mattered, but was also there with some quality on the ball to help us keep it. He is getting better and better and his partnership with Luis was really starting to give us a solid platform to build on.
i am very very proud of the team this week, and with any luck Luis will not take long to recover from what could have been a very serious injury. As much as this has been a long and tough season for us all, wednesday made it all worth it. I have very high hopes now for Saturday as we face Estepona at Home, albeit without Luis, we should have Juampi back, and will likely pair up Stefan with Nico in the middle.
Well done to everyone, and also special thanks to Tracey and Mustafa who assisted with Luis. The support from the few parents that do come and watch makes a massive difference to the team and i know they notice it when there is vocal support. best wishes to Luis whom we hope will make a speedy recovery.
